A song by Lorne Laliberte
FOREWORD:
I wrote these lyrics for a local alternative rock band called This Hand Would, consisting of four very talented young guys. I worked with the bass player at his day job (actually, I worked the graveyard shift but you get my meaning :) and offered to write some songs for them to use. I wrote three songs, and the guys liked them, but sadly the band came apart before they did anything with them.
In the Cold© 1992 Lorne Laliberte Remember how it started? You and I, mismatched But brought together, Both in need of something neither Of us could control. It didn't last, how could it? But alone we never stayed, We didn't know enough cruel words To keep ourselves apart. And like two fighters beaten, Like two losing armies, like A machine broken that No one knows how to fix, We'd bring our hearts too close. We were Battle weary hearts Little hermit souls Thoughts all tumbled turning Love lost in the cold. And that was the real danger, The closeness of two souls, Who never should have bonded Like we did, because we touched In ways we didn't even know, And couldn't understand 'Though we had Battle weary hearts Little hermit souls Thoughts all tumbled turning Love lost in the cold. Scared by what we are together, Afraid of being apart, We'd go among the rubble, Find the broken pieces of Our lives we lost together, Burning on the ground With our Battle weary hearts Little hermit souls Thoughts all tumbled turning Love lost in the cold. We'd stay until we'd use our eyes And see just who we were, Two different people, not The same, not the same at all, And we'd leave each other In a rush to tear ourselves away, And lose another corner of our Battle weary hearts Little hermit souls Thoughts all tumbled turning Love lost in the cold. |
This song was inspired by an early relationship that should never have been. A suicidal "tough-chick" does not a good first girlfriend make, and I suffered from the effects of that relationship for many years. Thank God when I met Michelle I was over it enough to keep her.
For some reason my Mom really liked these lyrics. Maybe that was because she really didn't like that first girlfriend. I never told her that was what the song is about, but my Mom is pretty smart.
