War is Hell is Life is War

A song by Lorne Laliberte

Foreword:

I wrote these lyrics for a local alternative rock band called This Hand Would. Unfortunately the band fell apart before anything was done with them.

War is Hell is Life is War

So you're just a common soldier,
Living out a war,
Running from the danger,
Nothing to fight for.
Don't believe in nothing,
You want it all and more,
Life stalks you like a madman,
Knocking down your door.

Standing in a dark place,
Can't see with your eyes,
Know you have to reach out
But you can't face the surprise.
Life she comes to get you,
Oh but don't believe her lies,
Get out of there while you can,
Find someplace to hide.

Shiver in the cold place
Where you stay locked up inside,
Got no one to protect you,
No one else is on your side.
Life she comes, she finds you,
Like she's answering your call,
But you never even whispered
No, you made no sound at all.

If you stay
Life might reach you,
She knows you're trapped inside.
If you run
Life might catch you,
She might pull you from your hide.
If you fight her
Life might beat you,
You could surrender but you don't dare,
Life's always been chasing you
And no one's ever cared.

You wait for the last second,
Throw your back against the wall,
And when life comes you can't decide,
So you trip, stumble and fall
Trip, stumble and fall
Trip, stumble and fall.

You were just a common soldier,
Thought you could survive the war,
But life she came and found you
And she busted down your door,
That's right she busted down your door,
She busted down your door.

Afterword:

I remember intending this to have a rock blues feel, and in my head it still sounds like something Melissa Etheridge might sing...or maybe the great Canadian rock group, RUSH. I like the reluctant-coming-of-age theme, but the writing feels a bit contrived to me now.
